Carpet Grass - Axonopus fissifolius syn. affinis
Description:
Carpet Grass is a perennial creeping grass, which makes a dense sod. It is a low profile lawn grass, which has the ability to perform well in a wide variety of soil conditions.
Characteristics:
Because of its prostrate growth and denseness of sod, Carpet Grass can be used alone as a straight Carpet Grass lawn or in a mixture with other warm climate grasses.
There has been some confusion in past years between Axonopus affinis (narrow leaf Carpet Grass) and Axonopus compressus (broadleaf Carpet Grass).
Axonopus compressus does not set viable seed and can only be established with cuttings or stolons.
Part of the confusion relates to the fact that under certain circumstances, Axonopus affinis may have a reasonably broad leaf. In addition and to add to the confusion, Axonopus affinis used to be known many years ago in Australia as “paspalum compressum” or “compressum”.
Usage & Application:
Areas of use are the tropics, subtropics and some warmer temperate regions. Carpet Grass is used for park and playing fields and for soil stabilisation work.
Sowing Rates:
- 1-1.5kg per 100m2 for lawn establishment
- 34-45 kg/ha for pasture plantings
- The seed count is 2,976,750 seeds per kg.
Establishment & Maintenance:
Carpet Grass can be established and thrive in low fertility and acid soils and requires little or no maintenance.
